SemiDrive enlists ex-GigaDevice exec as CEO
China automotive processor startup SemiDrive has appointed Cheng Taiyi, former CEO of GigaDevices Semiconductor Inc., as its CEO.
Nanjing SemiDrive Technology Ltd. (Nanjing, China), also known as Xinchi Technology, was founded in June 2018 by Zhang Qiang and Qiu Yujing aka Maggie Qiu. Zhang will continue as chief marketing officer and Qiu, who was CEO, becomes chief operating officer.
Since its formation the company has launched four series of products, reportedly shipped more than 1 million chips and serves greater than 90 percent of China’s car manufacturers and some international car companies. Prior to founding SemiDrive Maggie Qiu was general manager Freescale Qiangxin, as well as R&D director for i.MX product line at Freescale.
Cheng is an experienced semiconductor entrepreneur and executive. He graduated from Tsinghua University before receiving a master’s degree from the University of Washington. In 2011, he founded Sili Microelectronics Technology Co. Ltd. in Shanghai and went on to merge it with Zhaoyi Innovation Technology Group, aka GigaDevices in 2019. GigaDevices is ranked as China’s fifth largest chip company by a recent Gartner report (see Top 25 global and Chinese chip companies ranked). Cheng served as CEO of GigaDevices from 2020 to 2022.
